Task 1

John Burningham

After watching the BBC TV Programme 'When We Were Young'  the mention of  the author and Illustrator John Burning's 'Granpa' Brought back a lot of memories. This was a book I remember my dad reading to me when I was little. At the time I paid more attention to the Illustrations than the story.

I admire how John Burningham's picture books reflect on issues some young children will possibly have to encounter at some point in their lives.

Illustrations from the picture book 'Granpa'...

The way how the illustrations gradually start to fade towards the end of the story almost feels as if you are looking into a childs memory.

After carrying out some research into John Burningham I came across a animated film created by Diane Jackson based on the book 'Granpa'. (Link below)

Other Illustrations By John Burningham

John Burningham uses a limited colour pallet for a lot of his illustrations. He uses a mixture of different mediums such as pastel, ink, pen, pencil and paint which can be seen above. I like how he adds texture to some images by using a shape pencil on top of pastel.

I think the art style is aimed at young children older than 5 years old as I think there is a lot of detail and sharpness to some of the illustrations. A lot of younger children wouldn't be able to understand the story.
